DeVry University came into existence when it was founded in 1931 by Herman A. DeVry. The original name for the school was DeForest Training School and it was located in Chicago. The original name of the school was named after Lee DeForest who was an American inventor who had over 180 patents in the 1900s. Herman A. DeVry was close friends with DeForest.
Throughout the years DeVry expanded and in 1956 they opened a school in Canada. At that time their North American locations had a student population well over 65,000 students. DeVry began incorporating other schools into its program. Keller Graduate school was added in 1987 and in 2005 Deaconess College of Nursing was incorporated. CPA training was added to DeVry also in 2005 when Becker Professional Review joined DeVry Inc. They are also the parent organization for Apollo College, Chamberlain College of Nursing, Ross University and Western Career College.
Today DeVry Inc. is the parent company of both DeVry University and DeVry Institute of Technology. There are about 90 locations throughout North America and they have the largest online university in the world. Making it one of the most chosen schools for working adults. Courses offered by DeVry include engineering, computer information systems, business administration, networking, management and communications managements. Students can also take courses to receive professional graduate certificates in health information technology, business and office management. Programs include Associate’s degree, Bachelor’s degree and a Masters degree. There is also a wide variety of certificate programs for different subfields.
DeVry works on a trimester course. This allows a full-time student to complete their Bachelor’s degree in three years. Of all programs, most are either Associate’s or Bachelor’s degrees. For a Master Degree students attend the Keller Graduate School of Management. The Master Degree Programs are as follow: Project Management (MPM), Information Systems Management (MISM), Business Administration (MBA), Accounting & Financial Management (MAFM), Network & Communications Management (MNCM), Human Resources Management (MHRM) and Public Administration (MPA).
DeVry boasts that students who graduate from their school can find a job in their field in about six months on average. DeVry also claims that more than half of the Fortune 100 companies employ former students from DeVry.
Admission requirements states to gain acceptance into the school, the student must be at least 17 years of age. All prospective students are required to undergo an interview with an admission counselor, whether courses will be taken online or through one of their many brick and mortar campuses. Students must hold a high school diploma or GED. With a high school diploma students must have graduated in the 50th percentile and received at least a 2.7 on the GPA scale. All students are required to have at least earned a “B” in Algebra I or above. Those entering in with prior college work must have at least a “C” or 2.0 GPA; or have an associate’s degree from an approved institution.
DeVry has received accreditation by The Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools in the United States.
